It's not because of the wedding
Another by-product of announcing my engagement is that people seem to think that everything I do is about the wedding.
I mentioned to someone that I joined a gym only to hear, “oh, because of the wedding?” Umm, no. If it helps me look my best for the big day, that’s great but I signed up mostly because I’m nervous about re-injuring my shoulder. Dislocating it was pretty...
So I’m getting married. This means a lot of things but one consequence I didn’t foresee is the nightly dreams about dresses. They don’t do anything in my dream except hang there, but they are ALWAYS THERE. Clearly I need to just pick something.
Of course, then I’ll have dreams about invitations.

Ain't it the truth
Rachel told me a story about the time an exasperated teacher asked her students if they even enjoyed writing. After a strained pause a student finally spoke up and said, “I like having written.“

Winter of our Discontent
No one ever gets this reference right and I find it interesting how we have turned this allusion upside down. Shakespeare wrote, “Now is the winter of our discontent, made glorious summer by this sun of York” in Richard III. He meant that the discontent is over. The winter of our discontent, friends, is actually a good thing. It’s the last sad coughing fit of a troubled time...
MVF: right

me: I saw him pretty often when I was on that GET committee.
all doom and gloom
MVF: right
heard he and YYYY went to a conference in ireland this summer
so they're going out or something
me: and he showed up to those town hall meetings.
they're in a secret society. they have a special handshake and they eat and wear things that are symbolic of the greater truth. each moment is rife with literary allusion
MVF: no, I think they're just doing it
me: but XXXX maybe writes YYYY poems
MVF: about doing it
First Meeting with the New Boss
Me: Email doesn't count as student contact time.
New Boss: What?
Me: And neither do phone calls if they happen outside scheduled walk-in.
NB: hmm. I'll have to look into that.
I seriously want a piece of cake from Cafe Latte. Is that too much to ask?
Quitting Fantasies
When I start to feel stressed, my response is often the flight part of “fight or flight”. I’ve got lots of writing to do for graduate school right now and I don’t want to do it. I also have a job that frustrates me. I want to quit both.
So I have to have a little sit down with myself to remind me why any of this is important. During this internal discussion I have to...
My first blog
I’m so late to the game. I have refused to join Facebook and Twitter thinking that I already have too many things to follow in a day. But I do sort of want to comment on my world. I decided that a blog gives you, dear reader, the opportunity to see what I’m up to without any sort of reciprocal follwing required.
We’ll see how this goes.
